Announcement – Training on Low Cost Sustainable Sanitation Technologies PDF Print E-mail

The Water, Agroforestry, Nutrition and Development(WAND) Foundation and the Sustainable Sanitation Center of Xavier University,Cagayan de Oro will be offering a 4-day practical hands-on training on thedesign and construction of different low-cost sustainable sanitationtechnologies ranging from the simple Arboloos (literally 'tree toilet')over more complex single- and double-vault Urine Diversion Dehydration Toilets(UDDTs) to Terra Preta Sanitation solutions. 

 

 

The training will be held at the WAND FoundationDemo Farm in Libertad and at Xavier University from May 17-20, 2010 and will focus on the practical side ofbuilding and installing the mentioned systems and technology designs. In thepast years the WAND Foundation has developed a vast menu of low-cost sanitationsolutions and the objective of the training is to offer this practicalknowledge to those interested in the construction and installation of thissanitation technologies. The Sustainable Sanitation Center at Xavier Universitywill provide the theoretical support throughout the training with particularfocus on public health and the agricultural reuse aspects related to thesetechnologies.    

 

Key Learning Areas:

 

  • ·         Molding the specialized toilet bowls (urine separation bowl, arborloo, ordinary flush;        cement or wood)

  • ·         Construction of the Arborloo Toilet

  • ·         Construction of the double-vault UDDT/Ecosan toilet (will be simulation only as the           training time cannot accommodate the full construction of a unit)

  • ·         Construction of the single-vault UDDT

  • ·         Constructing other specialized simple UDDT’s (‘hanging’ for coastal communities;                mobile and specialized for middle-class households

  • ·         Eco-Pees and public urinals (stand-alone or with multiple urinals)

  • ·         Construction of Terra Preta Sanitation

  • ·         Vermi- composting

  • ·         Seedling nursery development and tree planting using urine and faeces

 

 

The mode of instruction will be 80% practicum and20% theory. Participants are expected to get their hands dirty.  Maximumnumber of participants is 25, first come- first served basis. Training feeswill be on a cost-share basis between the participants and the organizers. Theoverall training fees (including board and lodging) will be 1.500 per persononly. 

 

After the training, the organizers will offer fulltechnical support and services via emails and text and other media for thosewho will be installing the system in their own areas.
